Spot It! - Overview
Spot it! It is a fast-paced and highly interactive game that is great for 1v1 or groups of people. This game will bring out your competitive side. This is the kind of game where you feel like you are using your brain instinctively. You need to move quickly to match the symbols on the cards. There are several mini games you can play with this set; however, regardless of the game you are playing, the goal is always to be the fastest player to spot the matching symbols between two cards and call them out.
There are over 50 symbols total, and 8 symbols on each card. There is always one and only one matching symbol between any two cards! (If you would like to know how this works, read below.)
Spot It! Background
Spot it! It is based on a principle of interaction where two lines always have a single point in common. You might be asking why there is always one matching symbol in Spot It? That’s right, this fun, interactive, fast-paced game is based on math, not magic. You can read more about how this works here.
How to Play Spot It!
Game Basics
To help understand how the mini games work, draw 2 cards at random and place them face up on the table so that everyone can see them. Work together to find the matching symbol between the two cards (same shape, colour, size may be different). The first player to find the matching symbol must call out the name, then draw two new cards and repeat. This will give you a sense of how the mini games are going to work.
Game Variation 1 - The Tower
- Game Objective: To collect the most cards.
- Give each player one card face down and place the remaining cards face up in the middle of the table to form the draw pile.
- All players look at their card simultaneously and try to spot the 1 symbol that appears on both the centre card and their own card.
- As soon as you find the match, call it out and take the centre card and place it face up in your personal pile - you will now use this new card to find a match on the new centre card.
- Continue playing until the draw pile runs out. The winner has the most cards.
Game Variation 2 - The Well
- Game Objective: Be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
- Place one card face up in the middle of the table and deal the rest of the cards out evenly between players.
- When play begins, players flip their entire draw pile over so it is face up.
- If you are the first player to spot the matching symbol on both your top card and the centre card, call it out and place your card on top of the centre pile. Use the new card revealed on your personal pile to find a match with the centre card.
- Continue playing until someone has discarded all of their cards. This person is the winner!
Game Variation 3 - Hot Potato
- Game Objective: To have the fewest cards after all the rounds have been played. This is achieved by getting rid of your cards each round.
- Deal 1 card face down to each player, and set aside the remaining cards to use later. Decide how many rounds you want to play - minimum 5.
- When play begins, players all flip their cards face up and hold them flat in their hands. If you spot another match between your card and another player’s card, call it and place your card face up on top of th either player’s card.
- If you now have two or more cards in your hand, only look at the top card for your match. Continue playing until 1 player has all the cards. That player loses the round and places all the cards in front of them.
- At the end of the last round, the player with the fewest cards in front of them wins.
Game Variation 4 - The Poisoned Gift
- Game Objective: To have the fewest cards.
- Give each player one card face down and place the remaining cards face up in the middle of the table to form the draw pile.
- When play begins, players all flip their cards face up. Look for a match between the centre card and any other player’s card. When you find a match, call it and place this card on top of your opponent’s match. This is the poisoned gift, because you gave an unwanted card to an opponent.
- Continue playing like this until the draw pile runs out of cards.
Game Variation 5 - The Triplet
- Game Objective: Collect the most cards to win.
- Place all the cards face down in a pile. Take the first 9 cards and place them face up in a 3x3 grid.
- All players try to find a matching symbol between any three cards.
- As soon as you find a match, call it and take the three cards showing the matching symbol and replace them with three new cards.
- The game ends when there are fewer than 9 cards left.
- The winner has the most cards.

Spot It! - Honest Review
This is a great, simple, family-friendly game that does not take long to learn. It is ideal for young families, with a suggested minimum age of 6 years and older. You can find Spot It in most discount and department stores. With all the different themes and versions, it also makes a great gift. Spot It comes in a small metal tin, which is perfect as a travel size. Generally, the most popular version of the game—and the one we have played the most—is the original version, where the winner is the player who wins the most matches.
Spot It is a quick-paced game that only takes a few minutes per round. It is definitely a game where the more you practice, the better you get. Sometimes, even though matches exist, you might not be able to find any. You can also get on a run with this game, finding a heap of matches while other players struggle.
In terms of downsides, games of Spot It can turn chaotic quickly, as people may yell out matches that you can’t even verify. Obviously, we discourage cheating. Players who are naturally faster at spotting matches tend to dominate, which can leave slower players behind in terms of replayability. The game can feel a bit repetitive after multiple rounds, but with five different game options in the rules, there is the option to mix it up.
Hopefully, Spot It is a game you will add to your game shelf soon. It is perfect for anyone looking for a fast, family-friendly card game. Its simple rules, quick gameplay, and small, portable tin make it ideal for trips and family gatherings.
