Danger Danger - Overview
You have got to be quick for this game! Danger Danger is a fast-paced card game for two teams. The goal is to discard all your cards and have more cases showing than the other team by the buzzer. The team with the most cases showing at the end of the round earns a point token, and the first team with three point tokens wins the game.
But wait… there is more… if you don’t discard all your cards by the end of the timer, your team automatically loses the round. We told you, you needed to be quick!
How to Play Danger Danger
To play this game, you will need something to keep time for 60 seconds; we used our phone. This game can include 2-8 players and takes roughly 10 minutes to complete.
Essential Rule: No one should be able to see the timer, and if it goes off while you or your team member(s) have cards in your hands, your team loses the round.
Step 1: Split into two teams (it is okay if the teams are uneven). Shuffle the yellow and pink card decks separately and provide one deck to each team. Place your deck face down for the draw pile.
Step 2: Place the top three cards from your draw pile face up next to each other in the middle of the table. These are the stacks which you or your opponent will be able to add to.
Step 3: Draw 1 more card and place it face up behind your draw pile. This is your team’s swap card - this will come in handy.
Step 4: Start the timer (hide it from view so no one knows how long is left). When the round starts, pick up the top card from your draw pile and try to play it on any stack (your stack or your opponent’s stack). To do so, you can play your card on any stack with a number 1 higher or 1 lower than your card. For example, you can only play a 7 on top of a 6 or 8.
Team Play - take turns so one person is not hogging the play. Your team can only have one card up from the draw pile at a time.
Scoring: If both teams go out before the timer goes off (congratulations), add up the cases on each of your team’s cards on top of a stack. Add any trashed cards to these totals. The team with the most cases wins the round and earns a point token. The first team to earn 3-point tokens wins!
Danger Danger - Quick Reference
Goal: Get rid of your cards by the end of the timer and have the most cases face up as possible.
Card Types
- Lots of Cases: Most cards have 1 case, but some cards have 5 or even 10 cases.
- New Stacks: When you draw a new stack card, you can play it on top of a stack like normal, or you can start a new stack next to an existing one.
Can’t Play your Card?
- Wait for the other team to play a card that may allow you to play yours.
- Swap the card you’re holding with the swap card. Now, you have a new card you can use. You can use this swap play as many times as you like.
- Trash Instead of playing your card on a stack, you can trash it by playing it face up near your opponent’s draw pile. However, at the end of the round, the other team gets to add the cases on every card you trash to their case total. (This is just helping the other team, so only trash cards as a last resort.)
Danger Danger - Tips and Tricks
- Firstly, get rid of all your cards; otherwise, you are automatically out.
- Secondly, try to cover your opponents’ stacks rather than your own, as if you both ‘go out’, then the winner of the round is whoever has the most cases showing.
- Remember, once you go out, you cannot make any more plays. This means that the other team could then cover all your cards…so keep this in mind.
- Try to cover up your opponents’ cards which have 5 or more cases, as this will mean they will quickly collect points.
- Trashing the majority of your cards to make the time limit. Yes, this strategy did come into play, and it may work, but it is betting that your opponent will not discard all their cards in time…it can be a risky move because if your opponent ‘goes out’, then all those cards you trashed get added to your opponent’s score.
Danger Danger - Honest Review
We like that this game doesn’t take too long to learn and that it is fast-paced. We are not afraid to admit that the 60-second timer was too short for us to begin with, so we adjusted the time to 90 seconds. Once you get the hang of quickly scanning the cards and discarding them, the 60-second limit is difficult but achievable. This is a quick and fun game to play. The time limit adds a ton of adrenaline to it. We have not had the opportunity to play this with a group of people, but it may be even harder to meet the time limit with multiple people taking turns and coordinating which stack they want to block. It may take you some time to get the hang of it.
